Documentation Guide

Essential information for your move

Learn about the key documents and processes you'll need to navigate when settling in Spain.

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is your all-purpose identification number in Spain. It's required for virtually all official transactions including opening bank accounts, signing contracts, and property purchases. The application involves completing forms, scheduling government office appointments, and providing proof documentation.

NIE Blanco: An A4 paper certificate (Form EX-15) issued to non-residents, valid for 3 months. NIE Verde: A green, credit-card-sized document for EU residents that serves as proof of residency. Non-EU citizens receive TIE cards instead of the green certificate.

Residency requirements vary based on your status—non-lucrative, work permit, student, or family of EU citizen. You'll need proof of financial means, health insurance, and a clean criminal record. Requirements differ significantly between EU and non-EU citizens.

The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is a physical biometric identity card for non-EU legal residents. It contains your photo, fingerprint, NIE number, and permit type. You apply for it after your visa or residency is approved through the National Police.

Request assistance

Generally requires 10 years of continuous legal residence. Reduced periods apply: 5 years for refugees, 2 years for citizens of specific countries, 1 year for spouses of Spanish citizens. You must pass the DELE A2 language exam and CCSE cultural knowledge exam.

Request assistance

Requirements vary by nationality and purpose—student, work, non-lucrative, and more. You'll need legalized documents, criminal records, and medical certificates. The process demands meticulous preparation and correct consulate submission.
